Katikati Murals
Katikati is a small farming town in the Bay of Plenty that you’ll pass through on your way to Tauranga.
Katikati has tried hard to make itself interesting being the “Mural town of NZ” and dotted throughout the township are murals of early settlers, pieces of history and life scenes. On a sunny day it’s nice place to stop for a coffee and have a quick look. To get the most out of the murals, load up this page on your phone - giving more detail, history and context to each mural.
There is a visitor centre in the middle of the town, next to the playground. From here there are some nice Art Deco style buildings to have a look at; the Fire Station and Town Hall.
Katikati’s other claim to fame is the Haiku Pathway, the largest collection of Haiku poems on stones outside of Japan. Build for a millennium celebrations it follows the Uretara stream behind the town and is a great way to stretch the legs and take a breather from driving.
Other highlights of the area are the Katikati Bird Gardens and their is a historical museum and cafe as you head towards Tauranga.

Walks in the Kaimai Ranges
There’s not a lot here, a smattering of cafes and shops.
Without knowing anything about the town or the murals, it’s hard to know where to begin or how to get more than just gas stop out of this town.
This is a countryside town so you will need a car. There are a few motels near the township and farmhouse B&B’s scattered in the surrounding countryside for a more rural experience.
It’s a great rest stop and place to stretch the legs. Wander up the town looking at the murals and down the Haiku pathway. Under 1hr.
Rural town but blessed with a big supermarket too. Couple of cafes, gift stores, bakeries and the usual local shops.
You need a car.
