    Vanuatu is a small archipelago located about 1,750 kilometres off the eastern coast of Australia.The small nation is made up of 83 volcanic islands which roughly contribute to the 14,760 square kilometres of the country’s total land mass.

    A flight from Australia to Vanuatu usually takes somewhere between 2-4 hours depending on the airline. Flights to Vanuatu usually cost around $200-$500 depending on the dates or seats purchased.The local currency is called the Vatu and the exchange rate is 1 AUD is equivalent to 95.67 VUV, or 1 NZD is worth around 75.18 VUV.

    Generally the best time of the year to go to Vanuatu is between May and October. This is when the nation gets the least amount of rainfall, and the temperature remains steady within the 18-28 degree Celsius range, making it ideal for all the outdoor activities you’ve got planned.

    Vanuatu is best known for its awe inspiring dive sites. You can’t really say you’ve had the Vanuatu experience without visiting underwater wrecks like the SS Coolidge, The Cathedral, and the Million Dollar Point. This is not to say that diving is not the only thing to do in Vanuatu. You could choose from activities like ocean cruises, fishing, surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, jet skiing. Or of course you could be like most people and just read a book in the sun by the pool or on the beach.

    Vanuatu is actually one of the few places in the world where you can go volcano surfing down the face of an active volcano and then go find a blue hole lagoon nearby to relax and unwind.

Downsides to Vanuatu?

    Even though mosquitoes and malaria don’t seem to be prevalent problems in the region, it pays to be on the safe side so you might want to pack some mosquito repellent as well as some malaria pills, especially if you plan on taking a hike through the jungle.

    Additionally, being a volcanic country means that there will always be a danger that one of the active volcanoes in the vicinity will likely erupt. While this danger is very real, the authorities have safety precautions in place and will not allow visitors to come near when there is a volcano warning in effect.


Where to stay in Vanuatu

Most accommodation is on the main island Efate and concentrated around the capital, Port Vila. However being a tourist destination, most people choose places to stay based more off the type, style and price than on specific location.

How long to go for

There are flights most days from certain airports, but your length of stay might be slightly determined by flights. Ideally 3-4 days at a minimum and up to a week is typical for most holiday makers.
