Palm trees, clear water and sunshine, an idyllic beach holiday - that's what the brochures all say. But equally you could get sitting by the pool, rain & expensive food. Hopefully for you Fiji is the former, but we thought we'd paint the opposite picture to the brochure and then you'll think it's great.
Fiji is fantastic beautiful place, with warm and welcoming locals - but it is a small remote island. Parts of Fiji have the most amazing clear water and snorkeling is fabulous (especially out in the remote islands) but the beach in some resorts can be non-existent or rather rocky and not quite the idyllic white sand you were thinking of - the pool is where most people laze around and sunbathe. Now that your expecting a poolside holiday and you've bought snacks - you'll love it.
If you get glorious sunshine all week, thank your lucky stars, but it's a tropical island, which means it also rains a lot - at least it will be warm (and you do get the odd cyclone, but then again so does Australia).
Most tourists stay in resorts around Nadi (most flights land here) or lining the Coral Coast (roughly 45mins drive) – to stay somewhere nice is not cheap and an alternative might be to head further out. The Islands tend to offer the best beaches and the clearest water, Mamamucas or Yasawa are the most famous however the cost of getting there increases. You can always do a day cruise from most resorts. There is accommodation for all budgets, but the cheaper stuff can be pretty basic.
If you can try and see something of the islands other than the airport and resort, try this for ideas 10 best touristy things to do in Fiji.
Locals tip: If you’re staying in a resort, there is unlikely to be a shop nearby. Save some pennies, by taking a few drinks or muesli bars/snacks with you for between meals.
